The most abundant chemical components of slippery elm are mucilage and tannins. 

Mucilage is a type of fiber that forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water. 

Tannins are another well-known bioactive compound of slippery elm. Tannins are believed to benefit skin conditions, such as acne, due to their astringent properties. 

Other chemical constituents of slippery elm include: 

Calcium oxalate, Phytosterols, Flavonoids, Salicylic acid, Capric acid, Caprylic acid, Decanoic acid, Vitamin E. 

Slippery elm also contains vitamins C and B and minerals like calcium, manganese, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.
